Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Award Honors Memory Of Bethesda Volunteer

Jim Eichberg, who helped coordinate the annual Leukemia Ball, passed away from a rare blood cancer ten years ago.

At their annual ball Saturday, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society will honor the memory of a Bethesda resident who worked to support the group – while at the same time quietly struggling with a rare blood cancer that would eventually take his life. Ten years ago, Bethesda resident Jim Eichberg passed away at the age of 63. A Washington-area native and a long-time volunteer and supporter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, along with several other charities, Eichberg was a member of the Leukemia Ball’s executive committee. But several years after becoming involved with the Leukemia and Lymphoma society, Eichberg himself was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome, a rare blood cancer. Bethesda Resident Makes Community Service A Family Priority

The Montgomery County Coalition for the Homeless has recommended Michael Lichtenstein as an outstanding community volunteer for his work at a Rockville homeless shelter.

Raising a family dedicated to serving others is the legacy one local lawyer hopes will live on in generations to come. For Michael Lichtenstein, a Bethesda resident who practices law in Potomac, community service is a routine part of his family's life. Growing up in South Africa and later Israel, Liechtenstein says his parents raised him in a generous and giving household, something he's trying to pass on to his daughters today. The Washingtonian’s top-ranked lawyer cooks food to feed the homeless, works in soup kitchens, co-founded a nonprofit that raised money for children's causes in the area and in September will run his 26th triathlon for the Make A Wish Foundation. Bethesda Man Lauded For Work With Mentally Ill Youth

Getting on a bus, filling out a job application, setting up an interview – skills that may seem simple to some can prove to be daunting barriers for the mentally disabled youth served by the career transition program at Bethesda’s St. Luke’s House. But whether it takes three months or three years, career transitions specialist Benjamin Cramer helps his clients achieve independence. “I really like the idea of helping youth make their own decisions and be able to reach their goals,” said Cramer, 28. “Working on employment is a very practical and helpful way to work with teenagers and young adults.” Cramer, who coaches teens and young adults with severe emotional problems as they work to get or maintain a job or finish school, was recently …
