The popular Bethesda music school is one of the country’s fastest-growing small firms.
Popular Bethesda-based music school Bach to Rock, also known as B2R, will take its apparently successful approach to teaching students how to play musical instruments to the national level through franchising agreements. Bach to Rock, which operates six music schools in the Washington, D.C. area, entered its first major franchise agreement last week with the announcement that it signed a deal with Amplified Capital Partners LLC to open B2R schools in three affluent suburban counties in New York and Connecticut. Amplified Capital Partners will operate the Bach to Rock schools in Westchester and Nassau counties in New York and Fairfield County in Connecticut. Financial terms on the new deal were not disclosed. “We’ve experienced great …

We tell you the favorites from our Readers' Choice polls from around the county.
It's almost Mother's Day, which means if you actually planned ahead you either have flowers headed to mom's door or are taking her out to a meal. For nearly two weeks, we asked our Patch readers in Montgomery County to tell us which restaurants were the best within their regions for a meal with mom this Sunday, May 13. Maybe it's their signature Bloody Mary drinks or brunch burger but in Rockville, Matchbox took the win. But you might have to check them out next time, since manager Steve Hesson said they are "pretty booked." Readers in Gaithersburg and Germantown think French cuisine is the best for mom when they crowned Crepes-A-Go-Go in the Kentlands the winner with 40 percent of the vote. The Gaithersburg creperie features handmade, …

Readers voted for Clyde's of Chevy Chase as the best place to take mom for Mother's Day brunch.
Readers voted overwhelmingly for Clyde's of Chevy Chase as the preferred place to take mom for Mother's Day brunch. In Patch's recent poll of brunch spots in the Bethesda, Chevy Chase and Potomac areas, Clyde's of Chevy Chase won 54 percent of the vote. In second place was Old Angler's Inn, in Potomac, with 10 percent of the vote. Mother's Day brunch is the busiest brunch of the year at Clyde's, said Tony Moynagh, the restaurant's general manager. "It'll be several times busier than normal," he said. Between 1,500 and 2,000 people are expected to have brunch or dinner at the Friendship Heights restaurant on Sunday, May 13, Moynagh added. There won't be a special menu for Mother's Day brunch, although the brunch menu does change slightly …

Silverspot Cinema will debut in Bethesda as a part of a development set to break ground this summer.
A 12-screen boutique movie theater is planned for the Rock Spring Centre development, set to break ground in Bethesda this summer. The theater is slated to open in spring of 2014, according to a statement released Tuesday by developers DRI and the Peterson Companies. The news was first reported in Bethesda Magazine's Shop Talk blog. Rock Spring Centre, a one million square foot mixed-used development, was approved by the county planners last February. Along with the cinema, plans call for two office towers totaling nearly 550,000 square feet, 210,000 square feet of retail space, a 40,000 square foot health club, a 200-room hotel and 161 residential units. The development is planned for a plot of land on Rock Spring Drive across from Walter…
Artwork depicting community landmarks set to be dedicated Tuesday.
A new mural at the Bethesda Haagen Dazs is set to be unveiled Tuesday, and a series of performances is planned to bring the artwork depicting county landmarks to life. The idea for the 36 by 6-foot mural inside the Woodmont Avenue ice cream shop was born as the shop moved into the space next to the Bethesda Row Cinema left vacant by Gifford’s, according to Francine Segal, who co-owns the Bethesda location with her husband, Jerry, and business partners, Tommy and John Hughes. Segal researched county culture and history in order to choose which icons to highlight on the mural – including the Bethesda Trolley Trail, the Clara Barton House, the Montgomery Farm Women’s Cooperative Market and the Writer’s Center. Artist Christian Kanienberg of …
High-end Italian menswear store Bruno Cipriani will pull out of the White Flint Mall and head south to the Bethesda-Chevy Chase area this autumn.
Bruno Cipriani, the upscale Italian menswear store that has seen a downturn in sales at the White Flint Mall, is planning to move to the Bethesda-Chevy Chase area in the fall, according to store owner Eduardo De Pandi. De Pandi, who recently returned from a trip to Italy, confirmed that his store is planning to move to the Bethesda-Chevy Chase area. "At this moment, we are negotiating the lease," he said, so not all of the details have been worked out yet. When asked if he planned to re-locate to Friendship Heights, De Pandi suggested that he will more likely base his business in Bethesda, in the area north of Friendship Heights and around Wisconsin and Woodmont avenues. He also stressed that the White Flint store remains open, despite …

As part of our series on veterans and jobs, we're posting veterans' resumes on Patch. If you're a potential employer, we invite you to take a look.
If you're a veteran or have a veteran in your family, you know that the job market for those formerly in the military can be worse than for civilians. In Maryland, the 8.9 percent unemployment rate among the 28,000 Iraq and Afghanistan veterans is higher than the state’s overall average. Veterans often get preference in hiring from government agencies but it's still tough out there. Patch has begun telling some of the stories of the struggles of veterans facing fewer employment opportunities, and the successes, too. We want to do more. If you are a veteran and are looking for work, we invite you to contact us so we can put your job search information on our sites. We'll feature you in your hometown Patch among hometown employers. We'll …

A mainstay on the Bethesda-Chevy Chase border, Persimmon Restaurant still delivers the goods.
Fourteen years on, Persimmon Restaurant—on the Bethesda-Chevy Chase border—still delivers on its promise of a fine dining experience. The decor is a bit tired, but the mostly older patrons seem to enjoy being treated to silver, glassware and starched white linen. The space is tight, but not uncomfortable. The wait staff is generally efficient, if not especially warm. But, be warned: This is not a kid-friendly restaurant, so don’t bring Junior along. Despite some minor disappointments, what shines at Persimmon Restaurant is still on the plate. Chef Damian Salvatore opened the doors of Persimmon on Wisconsin Avenue near Walsh Street in 1998. The restaurant has always enjoyed a generous level of popularity, as it stands out in the area for …

Great to have more theaters, especially if they show independent and foreign films and not just the Hollywood same old, same old. However, given the description, sounds as if the cost will be high if it's going to have appetizers, desserts, cocktails. Hopefullly, parking be free.   more ›
