A film screening, a fashion show, and special guest Andy Cohen of Bravo TV to headline Bethesda Row's fourth annual event.
The much-anticipated fashion event "The Front Row" lands on Bethesda Row beginning Thursday, and more than 40 fashion events, a film screening and a cameo by the Bravo Network's Andy Cohen are on the agenda. The event launches Thursday evening with a free screening of "God Save My Shoes" at the Bethesda Row Landmark Cinema -- a documentary that "journeys into women’s psyche and closets" to explore their relationship with shoes. The film highlights shoe designers including Christian Louboutin, Manolo Blahnik, Pierre Hardy, along with celebrities like Fergie, Dita Von Teese, and Kelly Rowland. Gary Krist brings his new book, "City of Scoundrels: The 12 Days of Disaster That Gave Birth to Modern Chicago," to the Gaithersburg Book Festival.
The third annual Gaithersburg Book Festival is Saturday, May 19, and among the featured authors is Bethesda resident Gary Krist. Krist has experience writing both fiction and nonfiction and will be presenting his new book, "City of Scoundrels: The 12 Days of Disaster That Gave Birth to Modern Chicago", to the festival. He is a recipient of The Sue Kaufman Prize from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, a Lowell Thomas Gold Medal for Travel Journalism, and a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, according to his book festival profile. Artists from across the country displayed their work in the Woodmont Triangle this weekend.
The Bethesda Fine Arts Festival returned to the Woodmont Triangle Saturday and Sunday. The street festival drew between 20,000 and 25,000 to the streets of Bethesda to peruse and purchase the work of artists from across the country and Canada. The festival, in its ninth year, is produced by the Bethesda Urban Partnership and the Bethesda Arts and Entertainment District.

Theater merger strengthens business, gives young performers more opportunities
Adventure Theatre in Glen Echo Park joined forces with the performance training expertise of Rockville's Musical Theater Center in March to form Adventure Theatre MTC. The new company has a stronger business model and can offer more opportunities for young actors, such as casting children rather than adults in the roles of Christopher Robin in Winnie the Pooh and Mary and Laura Ingalls in Little House on the Prairie Christmas, said the producing artistic director for Adventure Theatre MTC, Michael Bobbitt. A professional theater will give young actors-in-training a reason to “step up their game” with the prospect of making it on the big stage, and the revenue from the Musical Theater Center’s training programs will help offset the low-cost…

Work by high school artists from the 8th District is on display at VisArts in Rockville through May 17.
VisArts in Rockville is hosting an exhibit of work entered in the Congressional Art Competition for High School Students sponsored by U.S. Rep. Christopher Van Hollen Jr.'s office now through May 17. This is the 10th year that Van Hollen (D-Dist. 8) of Kensington personally congratulated the young artists, presenting them with certificates of participation and recognition in the national competition, which began in 1981. An awards ceremony on April 30 at VisArts included competition participants, their families, teachers and competition sponsors and organizers. Artwork depicting community landmarks set to be dedicated Tuesday.
A new mural at the Bethesda Haagen Dazs is set to be unveiled Tuesday, and a series of performances is planned to bring the artwork depicting county landmarks to life. The idea for the 36 by 6-foot mural inside the Woodmont Avenue ice cream shop was born as the shop moved into the space next to the Bethesda Row Cinema left vacant by Gifford’s, according to Francine Segal, who co-owns the Bethesda location with her husband, Jerry, and business partners, Tommy and John Hughes. Segal researched county culture and history in order to choose which icons to highlight on the mural – including the Bethesda Trolley Trail, the Clara Barton House, the Montgomery Farm Women’s Cooperative Market and the Writer’s Center.
