Update, 1:48p.m.: The driver of the tractor trailor who died during this morning's accident on the inner loop of the Capital Beltway has been identified as Jeffrey Todd Meade, 49, of Verona, Va., according to Maryland State police. The man in the passenger vehicle also involved in the accident is Romolio Phillip James, 28, of Germantown, state police said. James was transported to Suburban Hospital and was admitted with serious injuries, according to hospital officials. Police believe his car may have been stopped in the travel lanes of the Capital Beltway near the Old Georgetown Road exit when Meade swerved to avoid him. The accident tied up traffic on the Beltway for hours.
Update, 11:30a.m.: Maryland State police believe the driver of the passenger vehicle may have been stopped in the travel lanes of the Beltway at the time of the accident. The driver of the tractor trailer, who was declared dead on the scene, may have swerved to try to avoid the car, according to trooper first class Thomas Staley of the Maryland State police.
Police are working on notifying the driver's next of kin and will release his name after the family has been notified, Staley said. It may take some time because the driver is from out of the state, he said.
Monday morning, traffic was still tied up on the Beltway even after two lanes were opened around the accident site. Kegs of beer and Sam Adams boxes were strewn around the highway as workers used machinery to hoist the cab of the vehicle out of the wooded area alongside the highway. The body of the tractor trailer was on its side in the right lane of traffic.
Update, 9:44a.m.: TBD is reporting two left lanes are now getting by the accident site.
Original post: The driver of a tractor trailer that overturned this morning on the Inner Loop of the Capital Beltway was declared dead on the scene, according to Maryland State Police and Montgomery County Fire and Rescue. The driver of a car that was also involved in the accident is in severe condition at Suburban Hospital but is expected to live, Maryland State Police say.
The accident happened before 5a.m. on the inner loop of the Beltway before the Old Georgetown Road exit. The Beltway was closed for several hours but one lane of traffic was getting by the crash site before 9:30a.m., and it's expected to remain that way for several hours, Maryland State Police said. "The Beltway is a mess. Stay off the Beltway," said John McDonough of the Maryland State Police.
The trailer appeared to have driven off the road and the cab of the truck was against a tree when Montgomery County Fire and Rescue arrived on the scene, according to Capt. Oscar Garcia, a fire and rescue spokesman. A hazmat team was dispatched to control leaking fuel from the truck, Garcia said. The truck had been transporting beer, McDonough said.
Garcia said he believed the driver of the car that was also involved with the accident was an adult male and the only occupant of the vehicle. Garcia classified his injuries as "serious, but not life-threatening."
