B-CC Prepares for Shot at Third Straight State Title

Barons bring experience into 4A State Championship match against Bowie Friday

The Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School girls soccer team has players who have won multiple state title games, who have played in national-level summer tournaments and who will head to Division-I schools on scholarship next fall.

Still, the Barons will be tense, perhaps even a little anxious, when they travel to UMBC Stadium in Catonsville on Friday to take on Bowie in the 4A State Championship game.

With another state title on the line - it would be B-CC's third straight - coach Rob Kurtz is expecting as much.

"As much as you've been there and have been in kind of the same spotlight, you're nervous regardless," Kurtz said. "All of those girls have a high pedigree, but they're gonna be nervous because when something matters to you that much, nerves are part of it."

The Bulldogs, B-CC's opponent, haven't lost since their season opener on Sept. 4 against South Hill. They dominated Prince George's County girls soccer this season.

Bowie (15-1-1) beat Eleanor Roosevelt, their only real county competition, 1-0 in the 4A South Region Final before topping Thomas Johnson, 1-0, in the state semifinal on Saturday.

"They've played some lower level competition but they're still a very competent team," Kurtz said.

The Barons (15-2-1) will focus on Bowie forward Madeline Simms, a 30-goal scorer this season who has signed on to play at Miami in college. Athleticism and pace - two of Simms' main strengths - are also what make the Bulldogs successful as a whole.

B-CC is aware of that. But the two-time defending state champions have a winning reputation of their own.

Kurtz has made it clear his players view the game on Friday only in the context of this season. To some extent, though, he doesn't want the Barons to forget their past success.

"They could take a couple minutes to break through but it's definitely an advantage. We've been there before," Kurtz said. "We're used to this and we know what it takes to win there.

"We know how hard we've worked to get to this point."
